Return of the Whispering Tyrant

Session 3
In the city of Tor Gorak...

The group meet with the city guards at the gate. They halt the group and shout at them. The group does not understand what they are saying. Barik responds back to the guard and in short order they are let in the city. Soon after crossing the gate Barik separates from the group, Cirrus deciphering that he needed to report back to his superiors. Marit speaks and indicates to a certain direction. Cirrus figures that she is indicating to the home of her Uncle Vocar. They ride through the empty streets of the city, which the group finds strange due to it being midmorning and in most cities, the streets would be full of people traveling about. They reach a large, yet plain, building and Marit indicates to stop. She is helped down the wagon and waddles to the door and knocks. The rest of the group follow her and as they reach the door, a tall older man opens the door. His dour face changes to one of relief at the sight of Marit. They speak and the older man takes several glaces at the group. She enters the house and the man speaks with the group in the strange language. The older man then seems to say some words and Eustace recognizes them as a divine prayer. The man then speaks again, but this time the group is able to understand him. He thanks them for saving his niece. He recommends that they stay at the one inn in town and excuses himself. Before he shuts the door, Squeaks notices that he has a black mark on his face from some type of ink. Cirrus does not trust the man. He quietly sneaks around the house, climbs up the rough stone wall and gets on the room. Using his spear, he pokes a hole in the ceiling hoping to see Marit but instead sees the eye of the uncle staring back at him. Cirrus quickly gets off the roofs and the group hurries aways.

Walking down the empty streets of the strange city they quickly realize they are being followed. Before they can do anything a group of uniformed guards surrounds them, many holding crossbows and swords. They speak in the strange tongue as well but the group is able to understand that these guards want them to follow. The group agrees to go into custody.

They travel to a well fortified fort withing the city. They enter the walls and see guards training in the courtyard. They also see another large gate that leads to a road that go to a very large castle that is built on a plateau in the heart of the city. They are ushered inside a tall keep. They are relieved of their weapons and taken into what appears to be an spare room with 4 chairs. As soon as they sit, the chains attached to the chairs come alive and clamp themselves to the prisoners. As soon as they click on, Cirrus and Eustace realize they no longer have access to their spells. The guards start asking them questions in their strange language. Cirrus figures that they are inquiring on who they are, where they come from, if they’ve seen the shard, if they are spies for the Whispering One. This goes on for a while. After a bit, one leaves and soon returns with another man that has a cart with a hot brazier and several implements that the group quickly deduces that are torture devices. Everyone tries to break free of their chains. Cirrus completely breaks free while Squeaks is able so free her hand and Eustace frees one of his legs. Cirrus knocks the brazer on the cart over on the torture while Squeaks grabs at a sword of one of the guards standing next to her and uses it to hit another guard. Markus smashes the chair he is on and uses the chains to hit a guard. Eustace finally frees himself of his chains. He realizes that he now has access to his gods power he readies a spell when they all hear the sharp command coming from the entrance of the room. Everyone turns and they see a tall, stern man in a crisp uniform glaring at them all. Next to him stands a very old man in robes wearing a circlet. The guards stand at attention so the group stops engaging them. The old man speaks to the stern man. The stern man nods once and the old man indicates to the group to follow him. The guards release those characters that still have chains on them and escort the group with the old man out of the building. Before leaving, they are given back their weapons reluctantly. Once outside, which is early morning which means that the group has been questioned for most of the night, the man hurries away from the grim keep. Cirrus asks who he is and the old man responds back mentally to the entire group. He introduces himself as Varianis. He is great friends with Marit and she was worried for them being strangers in the city. Varianis being curious explained that he wanted to see who these strangers were and inquired about them. He soon found out that they were imprisoned by the law of the city who he calls the Daggers. They are the enforcers of Lord Kaz, ruler of Tovag in which the city of Tor Gorak is its capital. He tells them of that the city is ruled by the Dagger’s iron fist. They have curfew, break into homes looking for illegal items such as books. It is against the law to read or write. He also shares with them his distrust of Marit’s uncle though he is not in a position to question the man’s sudden interest in Marit.

Session 2
From the Mist...

Finding that they were in a strange place, the group sets up camp after a long day of travel. The next day, they set out on the wagon they had. A short while after they meet a traveler on the dirt road they are following. Swaying to and fro, they see that is a pregnant woman in a state of delirium and exhaustion. They try to communicate with her but she speaks a strange language. Cirrus, using his linguistic expertise, figures that she is speaking a language that hasn’t been speaking in centuries, High Azlanti.

They continue to travel on the dirt road which meets up with an ancient flagstone. Far to the west they see a volcanic mountain range that bellow smoke and ash. The cobblestone travels from the southwest to the northeast. The woman, getting some of her wits back, indicates to the northeast. They continue to travel and Cirrus is able figure some words and phrases. He learns her name is Marit from the city of Tor Gorak. She was looking for her husband Victor who did not return with his troop who was fighting the forces of the Whispering One. No one in the party has ever heard of the city, any wars going on, nor any one called the Whispering One.

Later that day they see a human fighting shadows. The group rushes up and help the human battle the shadows. After defeating the shadows, the human thanks them and introduces himself as Eustace Thistlebeard, dwarf from the Five Kings Mountains and cleric of Torag. The group looks at him in confusion and he just states that he is just tall for a dwarf. He is just as lost as they are and so they decide to join up and continue to travel on the

They stop for the night and rest.

They continue to travel the following day. By midmorning the group comes up to what looks to be solders on the road. Many lay dead or dying. Terrible greenish leaking wounds cover all of the solders. Marit goes down and seems to question the suffering solders, but they just shake their heads. Eustace appraises the wounds and they seem to suffer from a deadly plague. He goes to one of the solders and cast Cure Disease. The wounds disappears and the man is grateful. The rest of the solders see this and try to gather around the cleric but they all soon die of their wounds. The surviving solder, who Cirrus soon figures out to be named Barik, joins them on their way to Tor Vorak. Cirrus, using his skills with linguistics, figures out that Barik is part of the Army of General Kas. They are fighting the undead minions of the Whispering One who’s domain is beyond the volcano range. They were fighting the undead when these great fearsome machines rolled up and emitted a noise that opened wounds and infected the soldiers.

They made camp that evening. Eustace checked on Marit and noticed that she was under the affect of some type of drug, though it was wearing out. Sitting around the campfire that night, they were soon attacked by robed men with wicked daggers. The robed men tried to grab on to Marit but the group was able to fend them off, killing all but two who escaped into the woods. After the battle Marik collapse in shock and the rest of the group set up guard. The rest of the night was uneventful.

The following day they finally reached the city of Tor Vorak.

Session 1
A Simple Job...

The party consisting of Cirrus Nimbus (Sylph Rogue/Witch), Shiloh “Squeaks” Raton (Human Urban Ranger), Tame Corvus (Tengu Philosopher Cleric), and Markus Isgarson (Human Fighter) work for the thieves guild in the city of Kerse. They take a job from the guild to infiltrate the party of a merchant lord and steal a jeweled scabbard.

The party decided to split up. Cirrus and Squeaks take the Thieves Highway (roofs) to sneak into the merchant lord’s mansion. Tame and Markus plan to do reconnaissance and prepare to come up with a distraction if Cirrus and Squeaks need it.

Cirrus and Squeaks make it inside of the mansion by sneaking into the attic. They bypass traps. They see that the upper floor is well guarded and will need to have Markus and Tame come up with a distraction. While Cirrus and Squeaks sneak into the mansion, Tame and Markus through some fast talking and some guild contacts enter the party. They collect information and await the predetermined signal to run a distraction for their companions. They soon hear it and start a huge brawl. Most of the guards on the top floor run down with only two remaining behind. Cirrus and Squeaks carefully sneak unnoticed by the guards and search the two rooms located on the floor. In the first room they find a broken gun under the bed and nothing else. In the second room, they open the door and see a large rat with glowing eyes. Cirrus throws his spear at the creature but misses. The creature changes into a bat and vanishes from sight. The quickly discover the jeweled scabbard. They quickly bypass the deadly trap and take it. They also discover a lockbox. They try to disarm the trap and unlock it. They didn’t realize that the trap was not disarmed so when they unlocked it and opened the safe, the alarm spell went off. The quickly grab the bag that was located in the safe and run out of the room and climb up to the attic with the guards at their heels. They make it to the roof and are able to sneak away before they are caught.

The group meets back at the thieves guild and deliver the jeweled scabbard to their Nightwarden, Trevor Hull, a lieutenant that they report to in the guild. He rewards them with gold and let them go. They then meet at the Swift Wind Tavern where they go through the bag that they pilfered from the house. The bag turns out to be a bag of holding. Within it they pull out a powerful bastard sword among some other minor magical items. The fighter takes the sword. While in the mansion, Cirrus also found ledgers of trade routes, schedules and names that to the right buyer is worth a fortune. They take these ledgers to the Thieves guild fence. He realizes the wealth of the ledgers and offers powerful shadow armor to each member of the group.

A few days later they are called by the Nightmaster, officer that leads the Nightwardens. He gives the group a sealed document and tells them that they must take this document to his operative in the city of Elidir in the country of Isgar. They soon set out of the city, and follow the road to Elidir. Soon at dusk they are covered in a deep mist. They travel for a while through the mist. The deeper they travel through the mist, a mysterious pressure burdens their minds. The group soon travels through the mist and find themselves by a lake that shouldn’t be there. They look up and see that there are no stars and the moon looks darker than usual. They soon realize that the land around them is not familiar. They also noticed that Tame was no longer with them.
